Port security in the USA and the whole of the western
world has a vital significance, which has not been exceeded in recent
history.
The introduction of the International Ship and Port Security Code and the stringent requirements of the Maritime Security Act in the USA have elevated the need for strict and much improved levels of port security and security on the high seas.
All of the maritime nations of the world have seen an increase in the movement of cargo through their ports. For example almost 6,000,000,000,000 tons of cargo was dispatched by sea in one year alone. This accounted for a staggering 80% of world trade generally.
The proliferation of cruise liners and the cruise ethos of tourists have been marked in recent years. In one year alone 11 million passengers chose this form of transport and that figure increases by around 10% per annum.
World trade continues to increase by 4% to 8% annually suggesting that sea-borne cargo will have doubled by the year 2020.
